World Class Cancer Programs In San Antonio

San Antonio has the largest Phase I program in the world. In the last decade, 10 FDA approved anti-cancer drugs were started in Phase I clinical studies in San Antonio.


San Antonio has the only jointly operated hospital Trauma Consortium in the U.S., serving both civilians and military personnel. This unique partnership has made this community one of the country’s most prepared for a medical emergency or bioterror attack.


A recent survey of 5 hospitals in the South Texas Medical Center showed that of the 371,000 patients admitted in 2001, 111,000 came from outside Bexar County. The billings to those 111,000 patients were approximately $573 million, a substantial economic generator.


The Bexar County Medical Society, established in 1853, is the oldest county medical society in Texas and the eighth largest in the U.S.


Hospitals alone are responsible for $2.5 billion in economic impact.
Physicians contributed another $1.6 billion to the local economy. Other health care providers, ranging from dentists to chiropractors, contributed over $0.5 billion in economic impact.


After the anthrax bioterrorism acts of October 2001, federal officials turned to San Antonio for support in the decontamination of the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington. Behind the scenes, San Antonio's corporate, academic and military communities continue to develop a wide range of Life Sciences innovations to prolong and protect life for us all, including medical devices, vaccines, diagnostics, biodefense tools, stem cell technologies, transplantation applications and cancer treatments.


The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School is consistently ranked number one in the country in peer surveys. In addition, the Dental School has been awarded more American Association of Dental Research Fellowships – a grand total of 92 – than any other dental school in the nation.
