The Healthcare and Bioscience Industry employed close to 98,000 individuals in 2001. The industry added some 3,000 workers compared to 2000, but the growth over the four-year period from 1998 to 2001 has been a modest 1.7%.

Still, healthcare and bioscience employees – physicians, researchers, and many other relatively well-paid members of the community – play a significant role in the community and constitute almost 14% of the total workforce.
