The Healthcare & Bioscience Economic Impact Study was conducted by Richard V. Butler, Ph.D., and Mary E. Stefl, Ph.D., both professors at Trinity University.

The Healthcare and Bioscience Industry

The industry is not only large but quite diverse as well. As the graphic below illustrates, it includes both health care services and a variety of related industries.

Direct health care includes the services provided in hospitals, physicians’ offices, the clinics and offices of other health care providers and numerous other outpatient settings. In San Antonio, this includes both military and civilian medicine, a major Veterans Administration center serving a large regional area, and a variety of governmental and non-profit facilities and operations.

Related industries support or complement the provision of medical and health care. These industry sectors include the insurance business, pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment producers and manufacturers, biomedical research organizations, and a variety of other endeavors.

Following the practices established in The Chamber’s previous economic impact reports, this study is based upon wage and employment data obtained from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). Details of the data and methodology are presented in the Technical Notes at the end of this report.
