Texas Workforce Commission data indicates that the IT industry provided an average of 11,475 jobs over the four quarters of 2000. By far, the largest number (8,012) of these individuals was engaged in various types of computer and data processing services. The remaining 3,463 IT employees are involved in the production and sale of various types of computer products.

As with economic impact, this is most likely an underestimate of the IT workforce in San Antonio. In addition to the IT employees captured by the TWC data, the Air Intelligence Agency alone had 4,764 employees during calendar year 2000.

The growth in the number of IT employees from 1990 to 2000 parallels the growth in the industry’s economic impact.
