Student Aid Saturdays
There is a direct correlation between students who apply for financial aid and then going on to college. Students who complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are 350% more likely to go to college, according to the Student Futures Project. Even if the student does not qualify for federal aid, the FAFSA must be submitted before many universities will consider granting scholarship and institutional aid to students. Since securing financial aid is so important, and the submission process is so difficult to understand, The Greater San AntonioChamber of Commerce partners with local businesses and school districts to offer application support.
Student Aid Saturdays is a city wide partnership that will target more high school seniors and their parents to apply for their federal and state financial aid. Multiple events will be held between January to March 2012, where parents and students can work with a volunteer to help fill out both forms. Some locations will also be in partnership with the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) locations. This is one avenue to encourage and support more San Antonio students to attend and afford college.
Goal
Increase the number of students who apply for financial aid through the federal and state financial aid applications by 5%.
