On Tuesday, February 2nd, approximately 1,700 students from 14 school districts and three charter/private schools visited 59 local employers to participate in a Job Shadow day. The employers, representing public and private sectors and small, medium and large businesses, opened their doors to provide students and teachers access and exposure to real world, real work expectations and share how there are many pathways that can lead to successful careers.
“This city-wide job shadow day is a meaningful opportunity for San Antonio’s youth to get a first-hand look at the various careers and jobs that exist across our city,” said San Antonio Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Richard Perez. “We hope that students will be inspired as well as better informed about the academic, technical and marketable skills needed to succeed in a career they can envision for themselves.
When surveyed about the day, students described the experience as educational, memorable, fun, interesting and amazing!
“Thank you for the opportunity to come and visit University Hospital,” said a Poteet High School student. “It was an absolutely incredible experience, and I couldn’t be thankful enough. When I graduate college I am working here!”
When completing a survey about the experience, employers commented:
“This was completely invigorating for our staff and connected to our mission. It gave us a chance to meaningfully engage with older students about what we do and their interests, and it also gave them a chance to see what immediate jobs and future careers exist in our setting”.
“Having the students actively engage throughout the program and seeing their interest at such a young age was very moving. I enjoyed coordinating this event and it definitely was well worth it.” We commend and recognize the nearly 60 employers that have been planning with their leadership and various departments to ensure a combination of meaningful and engaging activities for students and their teachers.
