On Saturday, March 13, the Chamber’s 30-person delegation set off for an insightful and educational 10-day tour of beautiful Spain and Portugal.  Upon arrival in Madrid, the group was given a city tour that included visiting the Puerta del Sol, Plaza España, the Parliament, Cibeles Fountain and the Royal Palace. The capital of Spain since 1561, Madrid offers a perfect blend of the modern and old world.

The next day, a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage site Toledo, south of Madrid, gave the group a view of the “City of Three Cultures”, having been influenced by Christian, Muslim and Jewish people. After two days in Madrid, the group traveled to Cordoba to see one of the world’s great mosques, the Mezquita, before traveling to Granada. The highlight of the day was the visit to the Alhambra Palace and Generalife, Granada’s main attraction. Considered one of the most brilliant jewels of architecture, the Alhambra is a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th Century.

A two night stay in Seville included the Santa Cruz Quarter, the Parque de Maria Luisa and a visit to the impressive Cathedral of Seville, considered the world’s largest Gothic Cathedral. The next day on the way to Portugal, a stop was made in Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring a Roman Temple and a beautiful town center enclosed by Medieval walls. Arriving in Lisbon during the evening, the group was impressed by a well preserved city with much to offer. The day tour included a visit to the Moorish Alfama Quarter, Monument to the Discoveries and Jeronimo’s Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the Belem Tower, another UNESCO World Heritage site.

The next day in Portugal, framed by a coast and countryside of exquisite beauty, was spent traveling to Fatima, Obidos and Nazare. The tour concluded with a special treat, listening to Fado music entertainment at the last night’s dinner. The Chamber trips “connect you to the world” by offering the very best of International travel opportunities and we hope you can join us in the future.
