Mission Concepcion

Hundreds of Matachine Dancers from San Antonio and South Texas will be gathering at Mission Concepción on Sunday, December 4 at 2 pm. The mission will be celebrating its patronal feast, the Immaculate Conception, which falls on December 8.

The Matachine Dancers keep alive a tradition of colorful garb and dance on special religious feast days. This custom goes back to Spanish colonial times when missionaries incorporated native indigenous music and dance into Catholic celebrations.

The dancers will lead a procession to the San Antonio River through Concepción Park and then back to the mission. All the groups will dance in front of the mission, and then each group will enter into the mission church to offer their dance in front of the historical painting of the Virgin Mary.

In San Antonio many families have three generations dancing together as Matachines. This is the 4th year the dancers will celebrate in front of the mission.

The public is invited to join in the celebrations for what promises to be a spiritual and cultural moment. Food truck vendors will be on site.
