Feeling safe is one of the most important aspects of a person’s life. It gives people a chance to enjoy their lives without the fear that they could be harmed physically, psychologically, or financially. Sometimes, a person living with a disability can feel vulnerable to accidents, or deliberate harm. It is important to understand and gain knowledge of the resources available to the disability community during the case of an emergency or just feeling unsafe. We would like engage in conversation around policing / law enforcement, emergency preparedness, and reporting / supporting to help build a proactive community in which Public Safety Reps are more aware of the fears and concerns of people with disabilities, and alternatives to policing by utilizing more disability-friendly resources in order to recognize warning signs and prevent incidents before they occur.
