On February 17, Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, Joe Straus, addressed a packed room as the first event of your Chamber’s Road to Session Luncheon Series. Speaker Straus identified important priorities that are expected to be key issues for the 85th Texas Legislature, which is set to begin in January 2017. Among these are transportation, education, business climate in Texas, and mental health.
Speaker Straus highlighted several Texas accolades. For example, we have one of the highest gross state products at $1.5 trillion and, for the last 14 years, our state has been the nation’s top exporting state. He attributed much of the success to the friendly business climate our state has in welcoming new businesses. Last year, the number of female opened businesses rose by 4% which is two times the national average.
Last legislative session, Speaker Straus successfully championed efforts in securing facilities funding for our local universities, investing in our beloved Alamo Plaza, continuing to address the needs for Joint Base San Antonio and secured funding to expand Highway 281 North without expanding toll roads. Our San Antonio community is extremely fortunate to have such an impactful leader who oversees the highest office in the Texas House of Representatives and is a member of our state’s most regarded leadership.
Your Chamber’s Road to Session series will continue throughout the year as we approach the next legislative session in 2017. We will be hosting key state leadership and panelists on issues important to you and your business.
