A six-person delegation representing the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s Aerospace committee recently participated in a four-day exploratory trade mission to the State of Queretaro and Mexico City to learn about the aerospace industry in that region.  The delegation included Marcel Johnson, Port San Antonio; Rey Cano, San Antonio Economic Development Foundation; Wayne Fagan, Dee Howard Foundation; Jose Luna, Alamo Colleges; and Skadi Tirpak, City of San Antonio. Jorge Gutierrez de Velasco Rodriguez, Universidad Aeronautica en Queretaro was one of the local hosts and Jill Metcalfe with the City of San Antonio’s CASA Mexico was the local coordinator of the delegation’s meetings in Mexico.

The Chamber’s Aerospace committee works to sustain and grow San Antonio’s confluence of aerospace manufacturing and production capabilities throughout the region.  The committee chose to visit Queretaro because of the aerospace manufacturing, repair capabilities and educational programs provided by the Aerospace University at the Queretaro – a university whose design and programming has been the leading catalyst for remarkably rapid industry growth.

“The purpose of this visit was to understand and validate the things we’ve read and heard about Mexico’s thriving aerospace economy. This trip was all about gaining insights and developing relationships in a particularly strong industrial region, while sharing San Antonio’s history and legacy in aerospace and aviation,” said Marcel Johnson, 2016 Chairman of the Chamber’s Aerospace Committee. “In the future, we’ll look to identify and promote collaborations and joint venture opportunities between the regions.”

In the months ahead, the Chamber’s Aerospace Committee will continue to facilitate dialogue and projects of mutual interest with industry partners South of border.  If you have interest in learning more or getting involved, contact Ruben Gonzalez, Vice President of Economic Development at 210.229.2199,  Our aerospace committee meets on the second Thursday of the month at 3:30pm at our North Business Center.
