The Chamber was pleased to support the recent “Our Community Salutes” event held at the University of the Incarnate Word. This annual event was hosted by Our Community Salutes, a local non-profit organization that recognizes high school seniors who plan to enlist into the military immediately after high school graduation.
The evening included a VIP social, dinner catered by Rudy’s Country Store and Bar-B-Q, a presentation by MG (Ret) Angela Salinas, USMC – CEO, Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, and a special award to CW4 (Ret) Monty Gonzales, Churchill High School, selected as the 2016 Colin Powell Award Recipient. As the highlight of the evening, all 318 high school students (142 from the Army, 34 from the Texas Army National Guard, 66 from the US Marine Corps, 44 from the US Navy, and 32 from the US Air Force) were presented individual certificates and coins by senior military representatives.
This event, which started with the realization that most, if not all, young men and women who have agreed to serve their country received no other recognition before graduating, ensures these brave men and women are recognized. The graduates and their parents were also provided access to educational resources and connections to military support groups.
In all, more than 25 corporate and individual sponsors supported this event, and USAA provided gift bags for every student.
