Chamber Chairman Renée Flores, Chair-elect Rad Weaver, and President and CEO Richard Perez recently toured the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio to get a preview of the transformation into a state-of-the-art hospital to care for San Antonio’s youngest patients. The Chamber team met with President and CEO CHRISTUS Health Ken Haynes, President of the Children’s Hospital San Antonio Elias Neujahr, Pediatrician-in-Chief Mark Gilger, MD, and Director of Community Engagement and External Affairs for CHRISTUS Health and the Chamber’s Healthcare and Biosciences Committee Chair Vicki Perkins, along with several of the hospital’s physicians. During the visit, they were able to get a glimpse of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, the chapel, and the Culinary Health Education for Families (CHEF) program.
“We are blessed to have this amazing facility with the highest caliber of physicians right here in downtown San Antonio. Not only do they fill a need for pediatric care in our community, but with the treatment of children from across South Texas and the research and education that is happening in the hospital, the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is poised to be a hub of healing as well as economic development for the city,” said Richard Perez, President and CEO of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
When completed, the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio will have 200 private patient rooms with space for families; new dedicated spaces for treatment, education, recreation, and research; a dedicated emergency room for children, with plans to elevate it to Level 1 Trauma status; and more.
