For a third consecutive year, educators from across the region have participated in three cohorts of a five-day professional development session. Developed and supported by the Alamo STEM Workforce Coalition (ASWC), the Educator Externship program connects teachers with industry experts to learn how math and science are applied in workforce settings. The ultimate goal is to increase student awareness of careers in the San Antonio area and how they can be better prepared for those careers.
This summer nearly 150 educators were able to participate in the program. Additionally, 35 employers, including CPS Energy, USAA, Accenture, Lucifer Lighting, Joeris General Contractors, HEB, Toyota and many others, participated as host sites for our educators.
In prior years, participating teachers were limited to those who taught only Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics. This year, career and technical educator (CTE) educators were able to apply and participate in the program.
During the 5-day session, educators receive information on skill sets needed for specific occupations, the top occupational needs for companies, and ways students and educators can engage with their companies in the future. This information is then used by the educators to create lesson plans and curriculum using key concepts found in project-based learning.
Plans are underway to enhance and scale the program even further in the coming years. If you are an employer interested in participating next year or in participating in virtual tours during the fall and spring semesters, please email Priscilla Camacho, and we can get you registered.
