Chamber staff were invited to sit front row at a private press screening showcasing the four first place winners of the 2016 Josiah Media Festival, an annual nationwide film and media event open only to filmmakers 21 years old and younger. The press screening took place at the Urban-15 Studios located on 2500 S Presa, the venue that will host the festival on October 7 and 8.
During the 2016 call for entries, 1,819 entries were received. Of those, 248 were eligible for adjudication by a panel of filmmakers. Of the 248 films, hailing from 57 countries, 12 prize-winners were selected across four genres: narrative, documentary, experimental, and animation. As an extra treat, the group got a chance to view a film by one of San Antonio’s very own young, talented filmmakers, Alexia Salingaros.
The event is named after Josiah Miles Neundorf, a talented film and media artist from San Antonio, Texas who passed away in 2006 as a result of osteosarcoma. In honor of this artist, his parents Marcus and Nancy Neundorf and the URBAN-15 Group created the Josiah Media Festival, an annual film festival designed to showcase outstanding works by young film, video, and media artists.
Now in its 10th year, the Josiah Media Festival is one of the longest running youth film festivals in the United States. Each year, the festival has received increased international attention and participation. The press screening showcased the following first place winners:
“Ernie” by Hadley Hillel (Seattle, WA)
“A Harmonious Cacophony” by Isabel Reid (San Francisco, CA)
“Masso Awwo” (Right Ahead) by Ducan Senkumba (Marlow, UK)
“Acquiescence” by Fierrany Halita (Tangerang, Indonesia)
