Chamber leads 130 business and community leaders in 39th annual SA to DC

A delegation of approximately 130 business and community leaders were in Washington D.C. last week for the 39th annual SA to DC trip. This year, the San Antonio Chamber partnered with the Free Trade Alliance, North San Antonio Chamber, San Antonio Hispanic Chamber, and the South San Antonio Chamber to make the four-day trip a huge success.

Our 11 issue teams had more than 75 meetings on Capitol Hill with key, influential members of Congress and executive branch leaders to advocate for specific issues and community needs. In addition to continued efforts to get a direct flight from San Antonio to Washington D.C., issue teams discussed immigration, military, education, healthcare, and funding for infrastructure.

Each day our issue teams heard remarks from top congressional members, including Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, Senator Ted Cruz, Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Dean of the local delegation Congressman Lamar Smith. The group also heard from three key House Committee Chairmen, including Michael McCaul (R-TX), Chairman of Homeland Security, Kevin Brady (R-TX), Chairman of Ways and Means, and Mac Thornberry (R-TX), Chairman of Armed Services.

Issue teams also had a chance to participate in a panel discussion with four of the five San Antonio house delegation. The panel discussion was moderated by SA to DC Chair, Rudy Garza, Senior Vice President of Distribution Services & Operations for CPS Energy. House members touched on a variety of issues, including NAFTA, the Affordable Care Act, the Border Wall, as well as what can be expected with the new administration.

After each busy and productive day, the group enjoyed a reception where issue team members had the opportunity to mingle with congressional members and staff.  Tuesday’s event took place at the American Gas Association, hosted by CPS and Dykema Cox Smith and welcomed guest speaker House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The closing reception took place at Madison Hall in the Library of Congress, sponsored by Paloma Pachanga and Bill Miller Bar-B-Q, and welcomed Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.
