The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce was proud to be a part of a spectacular event hosted to honor high school seniors who have chosen to serve their nation in the military. With a crowd of close to 650 people, the sixth annual Our Community Salutes San Antonio dinner was a huge success.
The Our Community Salutes planning committee, hosted by the University of the Incarnate Word, worked for many months to ensure no detail was lost in honoring these 179 future service members, who are set to “ship off” this summer and early fall to basic training courses within the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Texas Army National Guard. Among the guests were more than 250 family members, 100 volunteers, and more than 100 special guests to include sponsors, special military guests, and city and community leaders.
In addition to honoring the future service members and their families, Our Community Salutes was proud to award the General Colin Powell award to Tom Clark High School counselor, Yvonne Martinez. The SSG Alejandro Branch and the De Zavala Army Recruiting Center nominated Mrs. Martinez for her outstanding service and advocacy of military service. The keynote speaker was LTG Rick Lynch (Retired, United States Army) who provided an inspiring address reflecting on the value of service to our nation and the invaluable sacrifices made by our nation’s military.
Another unique touch was Mayor Ivy Taylor’s official proclamation from the City of San Antonio naming May 17, 2017 Our Community Salutes San Antonio day! With more than 40 similar ceremonies around the nation, San Antonio’s event is consistently ranked as one of the largest in the country.
