Expanding on their success, TX FAME (Texas Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) is hosting an open house for their Advanced Manufacturing Technician (AMT) program. Looking to recruit at least 40 individuals for the program, the open house is set for Saturday, December 2 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Workforce Center of Excellence-Alamo Colleges (800 Quintana Rd., Building 8, San Antonio, TX 78211).
An expansion of Toyota’s original AMT program, TX FAME’s AMT program involves an application process with St. Philips College as well as a sponsorship with one of the participating companies. If accepted by both, participants start the program in the Fall of 2018, going to school two days a week and working three days a week, enabling them to immediately apply what they’re learning in the workplace. Students are also earning while learning and historically, many have graduated the program debt-free with a technical associate’s degree and work experience on their resume.
Technical skills learned in this program include electricity, robotics, fluid power, mechanics, programmable logic controls (PLCs), and industrial troubleshooting. Students also learn manufacturing core exercises including safety culture, visual workplace organization, lean manufacturing, problem solving, and machine reliability. With this multi-skilled foundation, graduates could work at any company that has automated / robotic systems which are becoming more common in various industries.
Sponsoring businesses include: CPS Energy, HEB, Takata, Toyota Texas, and Toyotesu Texas, Inc.
