Mike Kelly (USAA), Military Affairs Council Chairman, and Vice President of Military Affairs and Leadership Development, Lori Stinson, were among a large gathering of local Military, Civilian, and Community leaders from throughout San Antonio brought together to commemorate the annual celebration of the first flight of the Signal Corps Aircraft No. 1 flown by 1LT Benjamin Foulois on March 2, 1910. The ceremony was held on the lawn in front of the newly renovated Foulois House on Joint Base San Antonio – Fort Sam Houston. Cadets from Pearsall High School Air Force JROTC Color Guard and Floresville High School Air Force JROTC Chorale attended to emcee, present the colors, and sing the National Anthem and the Armed Forces Medley. Guest speaker, Rear Admiral (retired) Deke Philman discussed the historic flight and its impact on our military today and LTG Buchanan provided closing remarks highlighting the bravery of the young man who risked his life to advance the opportunities in aviation, which has laid the foundation for America’s military air superiority and success. After the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a tour of the Foulois House, which is operated and managed by InterContinental Hotels Group, or IHG, and IHG Army Hotels, both private-sector companies, and provides lodging services for military officers, government travelers and dignitaries visiting JBSA-Fort Sam Houston.
