San Antonio has a rich history in aviation and aerospace work. The community was well known for this industry after World War II because of the innovative contributions of individuals like Dee Howard. While this work has spanned many decades, much of the aviation and aerospace footprint has not been cataloged for some time.
In 2017, the Chamber’s Aerospace Committee held a strategic planning session, where it was deemed necessary to understand the ecosystem that exists today in order to grow. The Committee released a request for proposal later in the year and executed a contract with emsi in early 2018. The scope of work is to define the aerospace industry’s capabilities, identify new business opportunities, compare the San Antonio market to competitive markets around the country, and study the workforce needs and training.
The lead consultants will be visiting San Antonio next week to present initial findings and conduct further research through interviews with representatives of the various facets of the ecosystem, such as employers, trainers, manufacturers, and support services. We anticipate the assessment will be completed in the fall of this year.
The Aerospace Committee of the Chamber is the only organization that represents the industry in our area, and our 2018 Chair is Tyler Schroeder, Manager of State and Local Government Operations for The Boeing Company.
