Last week, the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee got an exclusive tour of TransGuide, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Intelligent Transportation System, and saw firsthand how traffic is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The TransGuide was developed by the San Antonio District of TxDOT and was the first of its kind in Texas. TransGuide helps motorist receive the most up-to-date information about traffic conditions and travel times using cameras, message signs and fiber optics. Motorist can also get information online and from a Low-Power Television Station. Lives have been saved because of TransGuide’s ability to quickly detect accidents and emergencies and alert first responders.
After the tour, committee members had a better understanding of why the Chamber has been actively engaged and supportive of the Traffic Incident Management (TIM) project aimed to minimize response and clearance times by rapidly clearing all incident and debris from the freeway travel lanes while ensuring safety for first responders, support teams, and the public.
