At BAMC, the numbers speak volumes

Your Chamber continues to be a proud supporter and advocate for our Military missions in San Antonio. The military medical mission is invaluable to our military around the globe, as well to our local community. Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) leads the nation in providing world-class healthcare for our nation’s warfighters, as well as their families, in addition to taking care of trauma patients throughout our region and being an important resource to our civilian medical providers, as well.

Here are examples of the great work being accomplished at BAMC:

— More than 11,500 patients have been screened and over 8,800 personnel have been tested as of 17 July through BAMC’s drive-thru screening and testing operation, easing the burden on the city’s overtaxed testing sites.

— Over 27,000 COVID-19 tests have been processed by DPALS. Lab techs have been running COVID tests for up to 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

— More than 89,500 vehicles were serviced and 162,000 prescriptions were dispensed at BAMC’s curbside pharmacy in just over two months. An additional 113,500-plus prescriptions have been processed through BAMC’s drop-off and pick-up in-house services since 1 June.

— While continuing to care for our active duty and military beneficiaries, BAMC is taking on additional trauma patients to ensure the region’s trauma response remains unaffected by the pandemic.

— BAMC has doubled its extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or ECMO, capability in order to care for our community’s most critically ill COVID-19 patients, to include beneficiaries, veterans and civilian patients. ECMO is a heart-lung bypass system that circulates blood through an external artificial lung, oxygenates it, and delivers it back into the bloodstream.

— Virtual Health appointments increased from 16 percent of overall appointments in January 2020 to 52 percent in May 2020 in an effort to keep patients safe at home.
