You now have five additional days to help shape the future of our country. The 2020 Census, which has been extended due to COVID-19, will continue through Monday, October 5. San Antonio currently has a response rate of 65.1%, slightly ahead of Texas’ 62.3% response rate but behind the national response rate of 66.5%. It is critical that we work to increase our response rate by the rapidly approaching deadline.
Civic engagement is vital to the success of our community. When people think of civic engagement right now, they are most likely thinking about voting in the November Election. Voting is vitally important but filling out the U.S. Census is equally critical. Responding to the Census is your civic duty, and your response affects our community’s plans for the future and your representation in government.
This Census is a once in a decade opportunity for you to help shape San Antonio’s future. It determines our representation in Congress and the amount of federal funding San Antonio will receive in the next decade. From the roads you drive on to the schools your children attend and police officers that patrol your neighborhood – all are directly tied to the U.S. Census.
If you have not already filled out the 2020 Census by phone, mail, or online, please take some time to do it today by visiting 2020census.gov or calling 844-330-2020. If you have already completed the 2020 Census, we ask that you tell your friends, family members and colleagues to do the same. We encourage you to post on social media about the importance of completing the Census. The pandemic adds an additional challenge to getting a complete count; therefore, we need to take advantage of every opportunity we get to spread the word.
