Your Chamber is gearing up for the 87th Texas Legislative Session set to begin next Tuesday, January 12. There is no doubt it will be unlike any we have experienced in over one hundred years. State leaders will need to make important policy decisions to help mitigate the impacts of COVID-19, not to mention passing an annual budget that funds important educational, transportation and human services needs. To do so, they will need to hear from constituents, organizations and businesses who can help them understand the most pressing issues facing our community and what is at stake. That is why it is critically important that we continue our advocacy despite the challenges of not being able to meet face-to-face. However, due to the uncertainties of the pandemic and new Capitol safety protocols for in-person meetings, the Chamber is hosting a virtual VIVA San Antonio and needs your help to make the day impactful, productive, and fun.
VIVA San Antonio is being chaired by Tyler Lowe, Manager of Community and Government Relations for Vulcan Materials Company, and brought to you in partnership with the San Antonio North, South, West and Hispanic Chambers of Commerce as well as the San Antonio Mobility Coalition. Registration goes live on Tuesday, January 12 with Early Bird pricing. We hope that you will join us for a virtual VIVA San Antonio experience and make your voice heard.
It is our belief that the 87th Legislature is certain to meet past the Constitutionally required 140 days in order to take up Redistricting, given that updated Census data will not be available until mid-summer. New district boundaries for U.S. Congressional seats and the Texas House and Senate will be drawn based on that data. Additionally, the Governor may add subjects to a called Special Session which gives our Chamber members the potential opportunity to visit the Capitol sometime later in 2021 or early 2022. The Board of Directors adopted the Chamber’s legislative agenda last month, and your Chamber is ready to start meeting with state leaders.
