Chamber talks veteran and military spouse hiring with Military Senior Enlisted Advisors

The Chamber’s Senior Enlisted Advisory Committee (SEAC) hosted its first meeting in 2021, where we highlighted the great work being accomplished by our Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) Military Missions, as well as the work in the community to support our transitioning veterans and military spouses who are seeking career support.

The 2021 Senior Enlisted Advisory Committee is chaired by Grant Hegner, Lead Associate, Military and Veteran Affairs, Corporate Affairs with Booz Allen Hamilton. The SEAC’s mission is to provide a forum to facilitate communication among the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers from all branches of the military in the San Antonio area, to provide a mechanism for the military to communicate any needs/issues to the business community and to provide a mechanism for the business community to communicate opportunities and resources available to the military, as well. Much of the work centers around the important quality of life issues such as education, housing, community opportunities, and hiring and transition efforts.

The meeting began with Service Updates from our military partners, and Command Sergeant Major Phil Barretto (Command Sergeant Major, United States Army North) provided an informative update on US Army North’s support of our Nation’s COVID response. “Currently, we are actively engaged in supporting diverse operations across the United States,” said Barretto. “The most important of these missions is our active COVID-19 support throughout multiple states, to include California, Arizona, the Navajo Nation, and Texas among other locations. We will continue to support the whole-of-America response to the COVID virus. You can find our latest infographic, which provides a broad look at the extent of our ongoing support on our Army North website.”

Our guest presenters focused on updates to hiring initiatives across San Antonio. First up was Serafina De Los Santos, Executive Director, 502d Force Support Group, who discussed the JBSA Workforce and Transition Alliance and their ongoing efforts to build relationships among government, non-government agencies, veteran non-profit organizations, and employer partners. The Alliance meetings are held every Tuesday morning, and attendees share and sync employment, education, entrepreneurship, credentialing, and holistic wellness information. The vision is for JBSA stakeholders to learn about programs outside the installation and for community partners to learn about JBSA and its requirements, in return. They accomplish this great work through presenting workshops, hosting career fairs, and spreading the message through the Joint Transition Readiness Centers. De Los Santos also highlighted the partners working to support the Skill Bridge and Career Skills Programs for our military service members. Employers and organizations interested in participating in the Transition Alliance at JBSA can call 210-221-2632 for more information. Service members, military spouses, dependents, or caregivers can call 210-221-1672 to find out what opportunities are available for them.

Next, our friends from the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring our Heroes Program joined to talk about Corporate and Military Spouse Hiring Initiatives. Elizabeth Larsen, Senior Manager, Military Spouse Program, Hiring Our Heroes was joined by Victoria Harvey, Program Manager, Fellowships, Hiring Our Heroes. Both ladies discussed the important hiring events that target transitioning service members and military spouses and not only include a hiring event, but provide essential training and skills to military jobseekers. They highlighted the Hiring Our Heroes’ Career Community, which provides free virtual education and training for the military community, and shared that these are live sessions that are also recorded for future viewings. Their presentation rounded out with the information about the highly successful Fellowship Programs for our Active Duty transitioning leaders and our Military Spouses, as well as new Salesforce Fellowship Program Opportunities and the Military Technician Education Network Apprenticeship Program.
