Chamber supports and participates in Purple Up! for Month of the Military Child

The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce is proud to support our Military Service Members and Families year-round, but most especially in the month of April. Since 1986, April has been nationally designated as Month of the Military Child and April 15 is recognized as Purple Up Day in Texas, a day to honor the youngest members of those military families. Governor Greg Abbott reaffirmed the designation of April as a month to celebrate military children in his recent proclamation and asked, “all Texans to recognize the outstanding courage and strength of military children and their families.” Designed specifically to highlight these young heroes, Purple Up Day holds a unique and special significance in San Antonio, Military City U.S.A. San Antonio’s Mayor Ron Nirenberg proclaimed more than 1.7 million children under the age of 18 have at least one parent serving in the Armed Forces and an estimated 900,000 children have had one or both parents deployed multiple times.

Texas has the second largest number of military school-aged children in the nation. This day reaffirms Texas’ commitment to ensuring excellence in schools, childcare, and youth services for our military children who remain resilient and steadfast through deployments and separations, many moves, and multiple transitions. Purple signifies “joint” in the military world, meaning “all services” and represents the blending of the colors of the five branches of the Armed Forces. San Antonio is proud to be home to all five branches: Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marines.

We are encouraging Chamber members to light up their buildings purple in honor of the Month of the Military Child and to show support for military students and appreciation for their strength and sacrifices by wearing purple throughout the month. The goal of Purple Up! is for military youth to see the support in their communities and in their schools. The City of San Antonio, Bexar County, along with USAA, Texas A&M San Antonio, and many other friends of the military in our region will be showing their support through proclamations, special events, and lighting up their locations purple.

The San Antonio Spurs will recognize the Month of the Military Child on April 22, where a portion of the proceeds from tickets purchased will go directly to Purple Up USA, an organization created to celebrate the Military Child every day. Tickets can be purchased here.

Additionally, at the Texas Cavaliers River Parade to be held on Monday, June 21, Purple Up USA is coordinating the participation of Military Children and a Live Band to represent the over 35,000 military affiliated children throughout the Alamo Region. If you are interested in supporting this opportunity for children to ride on the “Fiesta” themed boat or have a military child over age 12 who would like to ride, please email – the deadline is April 30 to participate.

From a grateful San Antonio Chamber business community to our military children throughout Joint Base San Antonio, we appreciate you! And to our Chamber members who will wear purple to show your support for our young heroes throughout the month of April, we thank you too!
