Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Bryan Daniel values the perspective of the business community in making decisions for his agency. In the spirit of this partnership, your Chamber invited Chairman Daniel to join the Metro 8 Chambers in a small group discussion. Chairman Daniel wanted to update us on the progress of several TWC initiatives as directed by the Texas Legislature including tri-agency collaboration with the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, data collection, and addressing the child care crisis in our state. The group provided some feedback on ways that the Chambers can help the employer community engage with the tri-agency work, especially with the creation of a statewide credential library and consolidating what data is collected from employers by state agencies. Your Chamber has encouraged TWC to consider various sources of federal and state funds to improve their data platforms, especially the public-facing web-based tools to benefit employers, and to provide clarity on when projects would be online. TWC is currently running a pilot program with Workforce Solutions Alamo on data collection and we look forward to learning more about the progress of that effort. Your Chamber thanked Chairman Daniel for TWC support for child care for our service industry workers. In order to address the impacts of COVID-19 and to support Texas’ continued economic recovery, TWC has implemented a Service Industry Recovery child care program to help low-wage workers in restaurants, hotels, and entertainment whose jobs cannot be accomplished remotely. While TWC is targeting aspects of the service sector with this program, all families continue to have access to TWC’s regular low-income child care subsidy program.
