Ray Mendoza has always seen flowers as more than arrangements — he sees them as art. That vision came to life last March with the opening of Ray’s Floral Boutique at 313 N. Main Ave., transforming his growing floral business into a creative storefront rooted in downtown San Antonio.
Mendoza began by designing custom arrangements for hospital patients, quickly noticing the emotional connection people formed with his work. Encouraged by that response, he expanded into weddings and special events, operating as a mobile florist across the city while working to build recognition for his brand.
“Starting my business from home was difficult because it was hard to let the community know about us,” Mendoza said. “Social media really helped — Instagram has been my go-to.” Opening a storefront marked a turning point,as it increased his visibility and enabled clients to see his work first-hand. Mendoza also credits his Greater San Antonio Chamber membership with helping accelerate that growth.
Through chamber events and connections, he expanded his professional network and introduced his work to new audiences. As his visibility increased, so did opportunities — leading to contracts with hotels and larger-scale weddings
across the region. To celebrate the boutique’s one-year anniversary, Mendoza will showcase his work during First Friday on March 6, with a series of floral installations alongside local artists at the Blue Star Complex’s C147 gallery
space. Visitors will be able to watch him create live bouquets, experience the installations up close, and shop floral-inspired pieces through a pop-up retail experience.
His work will remain on display March 6, March 14 and March 21. An avid art enthusiast, Mendoza said he noticed florals were largely absent from the local art scene — something he hopes to change by expressing his artistic vision through
flowers. As Mendoza puts it, “flowers speak louder than words.”
