Under the bright lights of the television studio, Univision hosted our February Board of Directors meeting on February 25. After energizing and entertaining the crowd with mariachis, the station’s Vice President and General Manager Chris Morris welcomed our Board Members and shared information about the station. Univision 41 KWEX, which was the first Spanish television station in the country, provides local news at 5 and 10 p.m., along with a wide variety of sports and entertainment programming.
Chairman of the Board Renée Flores introduced the following new Board Members and welcomed them to the meeting: Shana Robinson, Baptist Health Care; Marise McDermott, Witte Museum; Tom Cury, KENS 5; Carl Lum, Sea World; John Shank, Citi; and Mike Kiolbassa, Kiolbassa. She also introduced the new one-year Board appointees: Brad Morrison, Innové; Eddie Aldrete, IBC; Diane Warren, Bounceology; Laura Dixon, Silver and Black Give Back; Ed Cross, SA Commercial Advisors; and Navarra Williams, SAMMinistries.
Roger Arriaga, the Chamber’s VP of Public Affairs, provide an update on Annexation, that included detailed on limited and full purpose annexation, as well as the way ahead for the Annexation discussion. He also explained that there are two annexation reports that evaluate the viability of the program and the accuracy of growth assumptions, revenue estimates, and anticipated costs. These reports were provided to the Annexation Workgroup, which was appointed to review these components of the annexation program and to the City Council, who will ultimately decide on whether and how to move forward with this program and corresponding policy into the future. Robert Puente, Chamber Board Member and SAWS President and CEO also provided an update on the Vista Ridge project. In addition to reviewing the background of the project, he also stated that even though Abengoa was overextended, the viability of the project is still positive and they are doing due diligence to find partners who will make it work.
