For most of our adolescent lives, summer is a time for fun, relaxation and most of all, no school. As any College-student knows this mantra becomes harder to maintain as you get closer to that graduate degree that felt so far away just a semester ago. Summer internships are a great way to get some valuable experience that will help your post-College careers. The City of San Antonio’s Ambassador program began its 13th year this May, originating in Summer 2004 as an initiative by then-District 7 Councilman Julian Castro. Recipient of the 2005 Texas Workforce Innovation Award, the program aims to expose students to paid internships along innovative career paths in the hope of attracting these graduating professionals back to jobs and industries in San Antonio.  They help an average of 120 students each summer by putting them in positions where they receive training in high-demand jobs. Your Chamber makes an effort to host at least one student from the Ambassador program every year, with Wayland Baptist Junior and Business Major Aaron Martell interning with SA Works for the last two years. “One of the best things about this internship is meeting all the big wigs,” Martell confesses. “Getting the experience of working with the decision-makers in San Antonio’s business community has been a great opportunity for me. ”Not only can the Ambassador program help students gain College credits that they will probably need before graduating, the City will place them at an internship that will give them real-world experience that the classroom simply can’t deliver. Students hoping to apply for next year’s program need to be currently enrolled in a local College/University and have spent two full semesters there. Special enrollment consideration can be given to applications from San Antonio who are attending out-of-town or out-of-state Universities. All students must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA or better.
