Last Tuesday, Mayor Ivy Taylor launched her Summer Reading Club for children and Summer Reading Program for adults in front of a packed classroom of students. Directed by the San Antonio Public Library, young and old alike can engage in summer activities focused on reading what they actually want to read.
“We know that the most important way for young people to continue reading during the summer is to allow them the opportunity to pick what they want to read,” commented Mayor Taylor. “This program is aimed at encouraging students to continue to read during those crucial summer months when students can potentially slip back by the time they start the next school year.”
During the presentation, Mayor Taylor and SAPL Director Ramiro Salazar challenged businesses to encourage their employees and young people to sign-up for the reading program. “We have programming and services available for all ages including adults who are interested in improving their literacy skills,” remarked Salazar.
Students and adults who sign up can be eligible for certain incentives including certificates of recognition from the Mayor. Additionally, the program is supported digitally with help from Amazon, who donated 25 kindles to the program along with $500 in gift cards for the effort.
