The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors approved the 2017 State Legislative Agenda on Thursday, July 28th. This document sets out the Chamber’s official position on a wide range of political issues impacting our business community. Priorities on the agenda are efforts to ensure state government policies are conducive to a strong local business climate and that community decisions adequately support quality economic growth.
Developing the agenda was a collaborative process that began early this year. The Chamber gathered input on policy and legislative strategy through the priorities identified by the Board, Chamber council and committee meetings, and numerous calls with local and state leaders. The legislative agenda reflects our belief that state government can be a valuable partner in helping our local communities grow and prosper.
Much of the Chamber’s focus this coming session is economic development through job growth, business expansion, workforce development, and capital investment. In addition, The Chamber will work towards advocating for sustained funding in transportation and cultural preservation as well as maintaining local control of important issues impacting San Antonio residents.
Even though the Texas Legislature only meets in odd-numbered years, the Chamber remains active on the legislative front. There are special committees set up by the Texas Legislature that meet during even-numbered years to research a variety of topics. These committees are extremely important in developing potential legislation for the coming session, and the Chamber watches those committees for key issues.
