The Chamber hosted a joint meeting for the Energy & Sustainability/Transportation committees this week where they welcomed Maggie Iglesias-Turner, Wind Energy and Cargo Manager for the Port of Corpus Christi. Ms. Iglesias-Turner briefed committee members on the expansion efforts currently underway at Port of Corpus Christi, including the world class Harbor Bridge Construction project. She discussed how the La Quinta Channel Extension and Ecosystem Restoration projects will enhance the region's economy by providing channel access to a proposed multi-purpose dock and container handling facility. The projects consist of widening and deepening the Corpus Christi Ship Channel (CCSC) which will increase maritime safety and reduce costly vessel delays as well as reduce transportation costs by allowing vessels with deeper draft to access the port. In addition, the ecosystem restoration components will protect and enhance several important habitats. The Port of Corpus Christi partners with our very own Port San Antonio and Port of Laredo in the South Texas Alliance for Regional Trade (START) Marketing Partnership Program. START was formed to strengthen the region’s response to logistics and transportation needs, the driving forces of our diverse economy. The Alliance is anchored by Port San Antonio to the north, Port Corpus Christi on the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and Port Laredo located on the U.S. – Mexico border. These Ports have long-standing business relationships, bolstering the efforts and resources of our region. They work together in promoting their individual and joint opportunities available in the region and throughout the United States. The range of solutions come in the form of facilities, technology and many other incentives and priorities. The Chamber salutes the Port of Corpus Christi as they celebrate 90 years of service.
