Known as a passionate and effective fighter for limited government and economic growth, United States Senator Ted Cruz addressed a packed room of nearly 150 business and community leaders on Monday to kick-off the Chamber’s 2017 Congressional Series.
Attendees greeted the Senator with a standing ovation as he took the stage. Senator Cruz began his remarks by stating his optimism that this Congress is the one that can deliver the promises that the people elected them to deliver. Cruz laid out his four bold priorities for the administration and Congress: repeal Obamacare, tax reform, regulatory reform and confirming strong constitutionalists to the Supreme Court and Federal Courts across the United States.
Senator Cruz has been the foremost advocate for full repeal of Obamacare. He stated to the audience that after talking repeatedly with small business owners all across Texas, “Obamacare comes back as the single biggest barrier to small business growth.” Cruz emphasized that key to repealing Obamacare is to focus on lowering skyrocketing premiums by increasing competition and consumer freedom.
Cruz has made it a priority to pass tax and regulatory reform. He says he has asked Congress to pass “big, bold and powerful tax reform that will unleash economic growth.” Cruz gave a nod to the entrepreneurs and business leaders in the room whom he says are key to understanding how to create jobs and drive the economy. The Senator is confident that this Congress can pass bold tax reform and applauds the Chamber for taking the lead on this key issue.
Cruz concluded with remarks about the importance of appointing strong constitutionalists to the Supreme Court of the United States that will “ferociously protect religious liberty, free speech and the second amendment.”
Following the event, Senator Cruz joined attendees for a remarkable view of the much-anticipated solar eclipse. When the eclipse hit its prime at 1:09pm, attendees put on their pair of NASA-approved solar filter glasses, courtesy of the Chamber, to witness the rare phenomena.
Part two of the Congressional Series is in the works as the Chamber works to secure a date to welcome U.S. Senator John Cornyn later this fall. As we gear up for the Chamber’s annual SA to DC trip this spring, hearing from Congressional members now is key to developing the Chamber’s federal legislative agenda and helps lay the groundwork before the big trip.
