The San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame is looking for outstanding women who have made their mark on the community to be nominated for induction into the Hall of Fame at their annual gala on March 24, 2018. Nominations can be made by going to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/womenshalloffame or http://www.sawomenshalloffame.org/Nominations.html and submitting a completed nomination by September 22, 2017.
The San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame was established in 1984 to honor local women leaders who have contributed significantly to the betterment of Bexar County and adjacent counties. The women selected for induction into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame have made significant and enduring contributions to their fields while inspiring by example.
“Our community is blessed with many strong women leaders, so we want to encourage everyone to nominate accomplished, local women who have achieved great success professionally and contributed to the betterment of our community,” said Virginia Van Cleave, President of the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame. “It’s a great way to honor the women who have made their mark on our community, while helping to fund scholarships for many of the young women who will follow in our footsteps and serve as the next generation of community leaders.”
Nominees to the Hall of Fame must be women residing in San Antonio and/or Bexar County or one of the six contiguous counties, including Atascosa, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina and Wilson. Nomination categories include Agriculture/Ranching, Athletics, Business/Finance, Civic Leadership, Communications, Creative Arts, Education (K-12 and Higher Education), Health Professions, Innovation, Law, Military, Public Service, Science, Technology and Volunteerism.
Nominations should address the nominee’s accomplishments, role in mentoring other women, professional activities and awards/honors, and include a recommendation letter explaining the reasons for the nomination. Through various fundraising activities, the Hall of Fame funds college scholarships for young women graduating from the Young Women’s Leadership Academy, a 6th-12th grade, county-wide, college preparatory charter school in the San Antonio Independent School District. This past year, the Hall of Fame provided 56 scholarships totaling $67,000 to young women attending many prestigious schools, including Pepperdine University, Amherst College, Ohio Wesleyan University, the University of Texas at Austin, Baylor University, PACE University and Northeastern University. Graduates of the Young Women’s Leadership Academy have received nearly $200,000 in scholarships over the past four years.
Many well-known and accomplished women have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, including Hope Andrade, former Texas Secretary of State, Vikki Carr, Grammy Award-winning singer, Mary Alice Cisneros, former City Councilwoman and community volunteer, Sandra Cisneros, award-winning author and activist, Lila Cockrell, former San Antonio Mayor and lifelong civic leader, Renée Flores, 2016 Chamber Chairman and AVP Consumer Digital Support for AT&T, Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, Texas State Representative (District 120), Deborah Knapp, Emmy Award-winning anchor of KENS 5, Rosemary Kowalski, founder of The RK Group, Hon. Sandee Bryan Marion, Chief Justice of the Fourth Court of Appeals, Edith McAllister, long-time civic leader and philanthropist, Sheryl Sculley, San Antonio City Manager, Leticia Van de Putte, former Texas State Senator, Paula Gold Williams, President and CEO of CPS Energy, and Tracy Wolff, dedicated civic leader and volunteer.
