Earlier this week, your Chamber hosted a 2018 Primary Election Facebook Forum featuring Democratic candidates in the Texas Congressional District 21 Runoff, Joseph Kopser and Mary Wilson.
In an effort to engage a broader, more diverse audience, the broadcast the forum via using Facebook Live, and Shaun Kennedy, the Chamber’s 2018 Chairman of the Board, served as moderator for the insightful discussion. While the Chamber does not endorse candidates, we understand the integral role our elected leaders play in ensuring Texas and San Antonio maintains a business friendly environment and a thriving economy.
The purpose of the forums is to inform the community about the candidates on the May 22 Runoff Election ballot, and their positions on issues that directly impact the business community. Candidates took questions about multimodal transportation, education and workforce, business development, and efforts to support Military USA.
Kennedy kicked off the discussion with a question about the recent Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, specifically what steps candidates would take if elected to further stimulate economic growth. Given the Congressional Budget Office’s recent projection that the new tax law will increase the deficit by $1.9 trillion over the next decade, both Kopser and Wilson agreed they would explore ways to cut spending and be fiscally responsible.
Both candidates stated that they were supportive of a permanent solution for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. Wilson said, “If a Clean Dream act is not passed by the time I get to Congress, that will be the one of the first things I continue to work on.” Kopser mentioned that he “fully supports a solution to DACA” and “that a long term solution for immigration policy will work out for both sides.”
Kennedy closed with questions about a solution to lowering healthcare premiums and steps candidates would take if elected to protect and grow the military missions here in San Antonio.
The Chamber is currently working to schedule a forum for the Democratic candidates in the runoff election for Texas 23rd Congressional District. Once we are able to confirm the times of these forums, we will be sure to let you know.
