Tomorrow, Big Brothers and Big Sisters will honor the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce’s past-chair, Rad Weaver, for his championing of mentorship. San Antonio has a dynamic ecosystem of organizations, agencies, governmental departments, and businesses actively participating in cultivating the next generation of its workforce. There is a role for every business, from small to large, to play in this great endeavor for the long-term economic competitiveness of our city.
Workplace mentoring is a great option for industries to raise awareness, increase company visibility, build new recruitment networks, and expose young people to career opportunities. Big Brothers Big Sisters has developed a comprehensive model for companies interested in engaging in mentoring. The organization works with employers throughout the entire process, including providing student referrals, mentor/mentee matching, monthly meetings facilitated by Big Brothers Big Sisters staff, and measuring outcomes. The organization also provides transportation for the student participants to the workplace site.
The array of companies signed up for the program is a testament to its benefits. Public and private industries ranging from accounting to government to science/technology to social services and non-profits have signed on as workplace mentoring partners. Ultimately, the program aims to expose students to professional work environments while creating space for a friendship to form between the mentor and mentee. Big Brothers Big Sisters, through this program, has the long-term goal of encouraging students to stay in school and graduate from high school with a plan in-hand that leads to employment.
