In 1968, the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights held a six-day hearing at Our Lady of the Lake University to examine civil rights issues facing Mexican-Americans in the U.S. Southwest. The hearings covered topics ranging from education, employment, administration of justice, and economic issues.
50 years later, from November 15-17, Our Lady of the Lake will host Holding Up The Mirror, a commemorative conference that will re-examine the past and progress since these landmark hearings took place in the 60s. The conference will address changing civil rights, demographics, education, the administration of justice, economics, employment, immigration, political participation, and voting rights issues.
Attendees will also have the chance to celebrate Mexican American contributions to art and culture. The conference is free and open to the public.
