On Monday, more than 300 key business and community leaders gathered at the Marriott Rivercenter to pay tribute to the honorable Speaker of the Texas House Joe Straus. The Chamber surprised the Speaker with a video featuring key business leaders across the city thanking him for his exceptional leadership, character, and support for Texans and his constituents in San Antonio.
Straus began his remarks by thanking the business community for their support during his tenure serving in the Texas House of Representatives. “It has been an honor for our entire family to represent San Antonio in the Texas House,” Straus said. He acknowledged the Bexar County Delegation for their work to strengthen our local universities and colleges, support Joint Base San Antonio, and promote economic development.
Straus highlighted the House’s approach to public policy, “focusing on the core issues that create a dynamic, vibrant private sector that is ripe with opportunity... able to redirect billions of dollars to transportation, move projects out of the planning stages, increase high school graduation rates and improve the state’s mental health facilities.”
Straus urged elected leaders to continue to focus on the core issues that help our State and protect our future, and stressed the importance of voting NO on Propositions A, B & C. He also emphasized the need for business and community leaders to speak up and demand state lawmakers properly fund our public schools. “No responsibility of state government is more important than educating our children,” Straus said.
“Select few legislators leave an overwhelmingly positive, lasting mark on their community and across the State,” said Richard Perez, President and CEO. “The show of support from business and community leaders in the room is a true reflection of the lasting impact Speaker Straus has made in San Antonio and the state.”
The luncheon was broadcast live on the Chamber’s Facebook page.
