Military Spouse Appreciation Day was created by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 to recognize the sacrifices and support of military spouses. The first Military Spouse Appreciation Day was celebrated May 23, 1984, and the date has since been standardized as the Friday before Mother’s Day. This year, it is celebrated Friday, May 10, 2019. It is important that we don’t overlook the sacrifices of those who support our military, especially here in “Military City USA” and in the largest joint base in the Department of Defense. Millions of men and women make daily sacrifices as a military spouse, oftentimes without extended family close by, during long periods of separation from their beloved Service Member, and while continuing to keep the household running smoothly and holding down full- time jobs and raising a family. Spouses and children endure frequent moves within the states and overseas, change jobs and schools sometimes with short notice, and devote hours of volunteer time to support their service member and the organizations in which they work. Without military spouses and the support they provide, military servicemembers wouldnot be able to concentrate on the tasks at hand, providing for the mission to secure our nation’s freedoms. Honoring spouses with a day or recognition is just one way to show our sincere appreciation. This year, we at the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, want to say “Thank you!” to all of our Military Spouses who live and work in our great city and we would like to challenge your organizations and businesses to identify and recognize those who support those who serve, our Military Spouses, in a special and unique way. Offer an opportunity for them to discuss their experience and provide them with kind words and support, as well, on this important day specifically. Happy Military Spouse Appreciation Day!
