Hosted by the Techno Security & Digital Forensics Conference at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort, the Cyber Industry Council gathered for its monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 2. On the agenda: a federal partner briefing from the United States Secret Service, a discussion about SA to DC 2020 federal priorities, and updates from the five core focus areas.
Did you know that the US Secret Service (USSS) is part of cyber incident response in Texas? During this month’s federal partner briefing, the Council learned about the United States Secret Service’s presence in San Antonio. The region covered by the San Antonio office runs from McAllen to Corpus Christi to El Paso. The USSS is known for its men and women in suits who protect the President; however, there is much more to its mission.
For example, within the USSS, the National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) provides training for state and local law enforcement, including prosecutors and judges. Folks who are stealing online may not receive the same punishment as those who steal in person, and the NCFI helps law enforcement entities better understand digital forensics and digital crimes. In fact, the San Antonio USSS team often receives some of the most difficult computer forensics cases, and is a flagship for the NCFI.
Generally, the USSS has seen an increase in business email phishing, and a decrease in traditional hacking. Tying into October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), the need to #BeCyberSmart is critical. Visit the NCSAM website to learn how to protect and secure your IT.
Chaired by Accenture’s Jarrett Cravey, the 2019 Cyber Industry Council Chair, the Council is comprised of more than 350 members throughout the San Antonio metro area. Representing industry, academia, startups, K12 education, non-profits, and federal and military partners, this is the region’s one-stop shop for all things cyber.
