Election Day, or what many have referred to as Super Tuesday is finally upon us. This is your chance, if you haven’t already, to determine the direction of our country. Your Chamber already exercised its civic duty and encourages you and your team to do the same. Unfortunately, only 95,149 of the 1.13 million registered voters in Bexar County have cast ballots for the March 3 Primary Election. To put the number in perspective, about 8.4% of eligible voters have turned out this election and will determine the candidates you will see on the November ballot.
Most of the talk of this election has been about which one of the now eight Democratic presidential candidates will go on to compete with President Donald J. Trump in the general election this November. All the candidates seem to be talking about the same important issues but differ on how we address them. At the top of the list of issues are healthcare, climate change, the economy, student loan debt, and criminal justice reform to name a few. The President isn’t the only one up for re-election, there are plenty of U.S. Congressman, State Representatives, judges and county commissioners seeking your vote.
It is important that you participate in the political process by exercising your right to vote. Many of the important issues, laws, and policies in this country are decided by elected officials at all levels of government. The President, Senators, Congressman, judges, mayors, and governors are all elected by you. If they are not elected, then they are appointed by an elected official that you may or may have not voted for. Given the significant role our elected officials play in this country, it is important that you make your voice heard by voting.
The purpose of our representative democracy is for everyone to have a voice in what happens in our government, but right now the direction of our country is in the hands of a small number of voters. We encourage you to get out and vote and help us spread the word to your friends, colleagues, and network to do the same.
