On Thursday, the San Antonio City Council approved a $25 million COVID-19 Emergency Housing Assistance Program. Last week, the City of San Antonio proposed $15.8 million for the program and yesterday city council added another $9.2 million to the fund, bringing the total to $25 million. This program is an expansion of the existing risk mitigation fund (RMF), which helps struggling families with rent, mortgage, and utility payments. Prior to yesterday, the RMF had a remaining balance of $350,000. The emergency fund will help residents with paying rent, mortgage, and utility assistance. In addition, funds can be used to help residents pay for internet access, groceries, and fuel. According to city officials, 1,400 residents have already applied for assistance. With the additional $25 million, the city estimates it can help an additional 15,000 to 20,000 families. The program is scheduled to remain in place until July 31, but the city council could authorize it to continue. Funding for the proposed $15.8 million comes from the Affordable Housing Budget and San Antonio Housing Trust. The additional $9.2 million comes from the Under One Roof Program, San Antonio Housing Trust, and Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone funds.
