Wednesday, Mayor Nirenberg and Judge Wolff announced an extension of the Stay Home, Work Safe order until Tuesday, May 19. This is San Antonio’s 6th Public Health Emergency Declaration related to COVID-19, and the San Antonio City Council formally approved the extension yesterday. This order is in alignment with Governor’s Abbott’s most recent executive orders relating to the safe, strategic plan to open the State of Texas. Under this order, gatherings beyond members of a household are still prohibited and social distancing is still required in any shared outdoor spaces or stores. San Antonians above the age of 10 must continue wearing face coverings while in a place where it is difficult to social distance, such as in grocery stores or pharmacies. In addition, businesses must provide cloth face coverings to employees who are in close proximity to co-workers or the public. The Mayor and Judge stressed that residents need to continue maintaining social distancing while outside their residence. It is important to note that cloth masks are a secondary line of defense against COVID-19, and our primary defense is social distancing. Wearing a mask in public along with social distancing measures will further help slow the spread of COVID-19. We applaud the work done by those business and healthcare leaders on the local and state levels tasked with developing strategic plans to reopen our local and state economies. We look forward to the phased approach to reopen San Antonio and Texas in an effort to get all Texans back to work. At the same time, we understand the importance of heeding the advice of our healthcare professionals.
