The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce has long advocated for the needs of our business members on a wide variety of issues including the need for seasonal workers to help our struggling businesses accomplish their work and add to the economic fabric of the nation. As San Antonio’s largest pro-business organization, we urge you to reach out to your elected officials in support of the H-2B language in the House Appropriations Committee-passed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Appropriations bill that gives the DHS the flexibility to raise the H-2B cap if seasonal business cannot find US workers to fill temporary jobs and to support the H-2B operational provisions in the Senate-draft DOL Appropriations bill.
This language we are asking for is already in current law and has been for the past several years. If this language is not extended into 2021, important Texas industries will be facing a worsening labor shortage at the worst possible time. In addition, the first part of the H-2B cap for 2021 has already been hit! This means half of the allotted visas for next year have already been certified and taken. We are urging elected officials in Washington D.C. to extend cap relief for 2021. We encourage you to do the same.
