Your Chamber’s VP for Cybersecurity & Economic Development, Jeff Fair, supported Cybersecurity Awareness Month by participating in a panel on Thursday, October 28 about the importance of cybersecurity for small businesses. The panel was hosted by UTSA’s Small Business Development Center and moderated by the SBDC’s Troy Richardson. The one-hour panel featured three panelists including Fair who discussed the importance of cybersecurity practices for businesses of all sizes and focused on how a small business can leverage free resources to stay cyber safe.
Threats like ransomware and malware are real issues for small businesses to contend with and can shut down operations in an instant. Attendees were encouraged to do the basics like ensuring systems have the latest updates and are backed up regularly. The panel also suggested that training and awareness programs do not have to be onerous and can still train employees on the most common phishing approaches and scam email types. The final messages from the panel were clear, small steps to establish a cybersecurity training and awareness program can have big results for a small business.
