As we have previously shared in Chamber Today, the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) is seeking a new superintendent to replace Pedro Martinez who left the position to lead Chicago Public Schools. The district has been holding a series of community meetings to solicit input on what qualities or skills a new superintendent should possess. Your Chamber encouraged its members to participate in these community meetings or respond to a survey. Strong schools are critical to our community’s recovery and continued vibrancy.
Additionally, your Chamber leadership was interviewed for specific feedback as a community partner. Chamber President & CEO Richard Perez and VP of Education & Workforce Development Katie Ferrier both spoke with SAISD’s hiring consultant. The success of our community’s namesake school district is important to the business community. We encourage the district to hire an individual who will clearly communicate with the public and sees value in community partnerships. The new superintendent should continue to make successful progress in our local accountability measures and seek to maintain the positive board governance situation.
SAISD is not the only school district in the state seeking a superintendent right now. South San Antonio ISD is interviewing candidates for its leadership and over 50 other school districts across Texas have superintendents who have resigned or retired.
The Chamber and our members not only want to build a strong workforce for the future, but also ensure quality of life for our residents today. Business can successfully recruit the best talent when those individuals know that their children can access an excellent education and/or their property values are protected with strong community schools. Successful schools are crucial to the success of a community. Finding the right superintendent for SAISD should include everyone in the community.
