The Joint Base San Antonio Great Texas Airshow was back in full force at JBSA-Randolph after a cancellation last year due to COVID. More than 550,000 people attended the free event over the weekend of April 23rd and 24th. The show was an awe-inspiring celebration of our City’s military heritage as well as a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force and the 80th anniversary of the Air Education and Training Command.
Your San Antonio Chamber of Commerce was proud to carry on the long-standing tradition of hosting the 502d and JBSA Distinguished Visitors tent each day, with special thanks to our Presenting Sponsors: BCFS, Endeavors, and Port San Antonio and in partnership with JBSA. The tent sat front and center to the airshow flightline and welcomed special guests of Brig Gen Caroline Miller, Commander, 502d Air Base Wing and Joint Base San Antonio, that included retired military service members and their families; elected officials from the local, city, county and state; currently serving military leaders from throughout Joint Base San Antonio; as well as guests of the presenting sponsors.
“This air show, to me, is about everybody finally reemerging after COVID, bringing the families out, getting a chance to see something truly unique,” said Lt. Col. Georges “Huck” DeWilde, the Director of Air Operations.
Guests were entertained with pyrotechnics and sky-high demonstrations of aviation talent and historical aircraft, as well as on-the-ground exhibits, and of course, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, known for their breathtaking aerial acrobatics.
Static displays also highlighted opportunities for guests to see new technologies and Cyber/STEM-focused military displays, proving that the Great Texas Airshow had something for everyone.
