Based on the U.S. Census conducted every ten years, data is provided to states to be used by state and local governments to review district lines and to draw new district maps based on population growth or decline. The purpose of redrawing district lines is to ensure balanced voter representation based on population growth.
The results of the 2020 Census were released to the Texas Legislature in 2021. San Antonio Mayor and City Council appointed citizens to the City’s Redistricting Advisory Committee to redraw district boundaries to reflect change in San Antonio's district population.
After learning of a proposal to split the historic and central downtown business district into two districts, Richard Perez, President and CEO of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, testified before the Redistricting Advisory Committee in support of keeping the downtown business district unified. After testimony during the June 7 meeting, the Committee revised redistricting efforts to split the Central Business District and proposed to keep it intact. The San Antonio Chamber is happy to report that during an additional and final public meeting of the Redistricting Advisory Committee held on June 11, the Committee held that decision and approved a map that supports keeping the downtown business district whole.
The San Antonio Chamber was proud to lead the charge, along with Centro, downtown business leaders, and downtown neighborhood associations, and we express sincere gratitude to each of you who joined Richard in testifying, submitting comments, writing letters, and offering support.
The map will go before San Antonio City Council on June 16 where the Mayor and Councilmembers will vote on the proposed redistricting map. We have asked the Mayor and City Councilmembers to vote in support of the map the Advisory Committee has proposed. As San Antonio continues to recover from the challenges of the last two years, we are confident that a strong and unified Central Business District will benefit our entire city.
