Your Chamber has a long history of supporting efforts to strengthen connections between classroom and careers, including encouraging local educators to participate in externships. Many students struggle to connect classroom lessons to future career goals. Externships are designed to provide teachers with a range of experiences in business and industry that help them illustrate how skills can be used in the workplace.
The San Antonio Chamber is a proud member of the Alamo STEM Workforce Coalition that organizes externships for educators each summer. Sessions demonstrate the practical use of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in workplace settings. Teachers typically tour three host companies, develop a classroom curriculum, and bring back real-world stories and examples to share with students in the classroom. Lessons become more relevant to students when they know why they are learning something.
Chamber Vice President for Education & Workforce Development Katie Ferrier attended a recent session with teachers from across our community and provided the group with lunch. The educators shared how they will use this experience to help their students better understand career opportunities available here in San Antonio and even shared ideas to inform our legislative agenda items.
If you would like to join the Alamo STEM Workforce Coalition or are interested in hosting a educator externship, please contact Katie Ferrier.
